Doggie Day Care vs Take Your Dog To Work
Everyone loved Fridays, but some special pups are going to be even happier this Friday, since it’s Take Your Dog to Work Day. Pet Sitters International created the event in 1999 to celebrate the how wonderful dogs are as companions, with the side goal of increasing dog adoptions from shelters. Mark it on your calendars- it’s celebrated every Friday the day after Father’s Day. Here in Michigan, some large businesses like giant pet retailer Pet Supplies Plus are allowing employees to bring their pups in… of course, with a pet friendly company like theirs, it’s no surprise that they allow you to bring in your furry friend every Friday as part of their “Furrr-idays” employee perks.
As great as an office full of puppies might seem, not everyone is thrilled with the idea. A tech columnist wrote an infamous column in 2013, titled “No, I Do Not Want to Pet Your Dog“, which lambasted the practice of bringing your dog to work (or anywhere). He writes:
More Americans seek medical attention for dog bites than for choking or falls. You’re more likely to have to go to a doctor for a bite than to call the fire department for a home fire. Like it or not, American dog owner, your pet is a hazard.
But let’s leave aside the possibility that I’m scared (maybe legitimately!) of your dog, since you’ve assured me your dog loves people, and there’s no chance you could be wrong. What if I’m allergic? Or what if I just plain hate your dog? What if I think he’s dirty, since after all he did just put his nose in another dog’s butt? And what if I just want to go through my workday without being slobbered on by an animal?
Most dog owners have a hard time believing that someone might not enjoy their pups presence as much as they do. However, in any given office, there could be people with a legitimate phobia of dogs (cynophobia), or more likely just a general fear from some past incident, cultural differences, etc. Additionally, pet dander poses a real problem for those with an allergy, and exposing a highly allergic person to pets in the workplace is a guaranteed recipe for a bad day. Add in the fact that some workplaces are inappropriate for pets (medical offices, restaurants, manufacturing, etc), and it’s much easier to understand why the risks of having a dog at the workplace sometimes outweigh the benefits.
That’s why doggie day care is such a boon for busy pet parents.
