How do I introduce my dog to our neighbor’s new dog?
Make sure that both dogs have plenty of exercise before they meet. Put both dogs on leash and start walking in the same direction. Start with about 10 feet of distance between the dogs (more if the dogs are nervous). As the dogs become more comfortable with each other, slowly reduce the distance between you and your neighbor. Once the dogs get side by side, let them walk another half a block together. This allows them to get to know each other in a safe, relationship-building activity. It is similar to humans meeting a new friend for coffee. Once the dogs are calm and relaxed you can bring them back to your neighbor’s house or yours for a brief play session. Keep the interaction short and sweet. Remember that we want your pups leaving on good terms so they are excited to see their new friend again!
