It’s everyone’s favorite time of the year!  The sun, sand and warm surf create so many opportunities for outdoor fun, but also the need to make plan hurricane preparedness for dogs.  Preparing your dog for hurricane season involves several steps to ensure their safety and comfort. This comprehensive guide can help you get started.

Before the Hurricane

Identification

  • Ensure your dog has a collar with up-to-date ID tags and multiple family member’s contact information.
  • Make sure your pup has a microchip and that it is correctly linked to you for an extra layer of security.

Emergency Kit

  • Put together  an emergency kit for your dog that includes:
    • Food and water to last at least one week.  Keep in mind if you don’t has AC due to lack of power dogs will need more water
    • Enough medications to last a week and medical records (keep these in a waterproof container).
    • Leash, harness, and a sturdy carrier or crate that has enough room for your pup to make a full turn in.
    • Poop bags, paper towels, and cleaning supplies.
    • Familiar items like toys and bedding to help keep pups calm with changing situations
    • A recent photo of your dog in case you should become separated.

Evacuation plan

  • Locate the nearest pet-friendly shelters, hotels, or friends/family outside the evacuation zone.  Keep in mind that pet friendly shelters can fill up quickly, so don’t delay and have a back up plan.
  • Practice loading your dog into the car so they are familiar enough that you can load quickly and efficiently.

  • Keep up to date with tracks and predictions and any updates from local authorities.
  • Know your evacuation routes and plan ahead.

During the Hurricane

Stay Indoors

  • Keep your pup inside at all times during the storm.  You can create a potty platform by using a children’s plastic pool and sod or artificial turf should they need to relieve themselves during the storm.
  • Create a quiet space in a windowless room where your dog can stay during the hurricane.  Use a TV or radio if possible to prevent them from hearing the wind and rain as much as you can.  This should feel like a den with their pack to keep them feeling safe and secure.

Comfort and Calm

  • Keep your dog calm and soothed with their favorite toys, treats, and bedding.

  • Speak to your veterinarian to see if medications may help your furry family member to feel more calm during the storm.

Maintain Routine

After the storm clears

  • Check your home and yard for hazards before allowing your dog to roam freely.  Check for any downed trees or power line or accessories.  If you find anything please steer clear and call the power company immediately.
  • Be cautious of debris, fallen trees, or contaminated ground water.

Monitor Your Dog

  • Watch for signs of stress or illness.  Any changes in a dog’s schedule or routine can cause loose stool and upset stomachs.
  • Contact your veterinarian if you notice any unusual behavior or health concerns that persist.
