Puppy Love Experts

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting and happy experience. However, it also comes with responsibilities and challenges. As a pet parent, understanding the basics of puppy care is essential for raising a happy and healthy dog. From training and socialization to proper nutrition and exercise, here’s everything you need to know about puppy basics and how Dogtopia of Viera can support you on this journey.

Essential Puppy Basics Every Pet Parent Should Know

1. Training & Obedience

One of the first things new pet parents should focus on is training. Teaching your puppy basic commands like sit, stay, and come can help establish good behavior early on. Positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, are effective ways to encourage great behavior. Consistency and patience are key to successful training.

2. Socialization

Socialization is vital for a well-adjusted dog. Introducing your puppy to new people, places, and other dogs helps them develop confidence and good manners.  Puppies who are socialized early are more likely to develop into confident, well-mannered dogs.  So exposing them to various experiences early on can prevent future behavioral issues.

3. Proper Nutrition

Feeding your puppy a balanced diet is essential for their growth and development. Choose high-quality puppy food that meets their growing puppy’s nutritional needs. Puppies require frequent meals, so consult your veterinarian for the right feeding schedule based on their breed and size.  Some very large breeds may need to eat a puppy diet for longer than their smaller counterparts.

4. Exercise & Playtime

Puppies have a lot of energy! Regular exercise and playtime help keep them physically and mentally stimulated. Daily walks, interactive toys, and structured play sessions can prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.  Dogtopia of Viera provides between 8-10 hours of off leash play daily.  We have a much needed rest time from 12pm-2pm daily to allow puppies to rest.

5. Health & Veterinary Care

Routine vet visits, vaccinations, and preventative care (like flea and tick prevention) are necessary for your puppy’s overall health. Establishing a relationship with a trusted veterinarian ensures your puppy receives the best medical care.  Dogtopia of Viera requires all puppies to be up to date on rabies, distemper and bordetella vaccine.  All puppies 7 months or older must be spayed or neutered. All candidates must pass an evaluation to ensure your puppy’s safety and comfort in open-play environment.
